Decorative Finishes & Painting Los Angeles
The details that elevate everything.
Most of what makes a room read as expensive lives on the walls, and most of it is not paint. Roman clay that shifts with the light. Venetian plaster burnished smooth. Limewash that turns a flat wall into something with real depth. Done well, you feel it before you can name it. Done badly, it goes blotchy and streaky and ends up looking worse than the bare drywall you started with. Leo runs our paint and plaster operation, a 12 person decorative finishes crew that does this every day instead of a general crew borrowing a trowel between jobs. We hand-apply Roman clay, Venetian plaster, limewash, and microcement, and we handle the full interior and exterior painting in Los Angeles that goes with it. A finish only reads as well as the wall under it, so most of our time goes into prep and skim coating before any color does.

The Details That Elevate Everything
Most contractors treat painting as the last checkbox before they leave. Forma treats it as a specialty because it is. Our finishes team works exclusively in residential environments, applying the kind of hand-applied textures and precision coatings that require years of experience to execute consistently.
Whether you're working with our remodeling team on a full kitchen or bathroom project, or hiring our finishes crew independently for a specific space, the process is the same: proper prep, the right materials, and attention to every square inch.

Specialty Finishes We Apply
A proven approach that keeps your project on track.
Walkthrough & Finish Selection
We walk the space and look at how the light moves across the walls, then talk through which finish fits. Roman clay for soft, matte depth in a living room or bedroom. Venetian plaster where you want a smoother, near-polished sheen. Limewash for a chalky, old-world wall. We put samples up in your actual light, because plaster reads completely differently in a north-facing room than it does in a showroom.
Surface Prep & Skim Coating
This is where good and bad plaster jobs are decided, long before any color goes on. We mask off the room, repair cracks and bad drywall, then skim coat the walls flat. Roman clay and Venetian plaster show every ridge and low spot underneath them, so if the wall is not dead flat and clean, the finish telegraphs it. Most crews rush this part. We do not.
Base Coat & Priming
Plaster needs the right base to grip and to read true. We prime with a tinted base coat matched to the finish so the color has depth instead of sitting on top like flat paint. Get the base wrong and the whole wall looks thin and patchy. Nobody sees this step, and everybody feels it.
Hand-Applied Decorative Finish
Now the finish goes on, by hand, in coat after coat. Roman clay is troweled and burnished for that soft movement. Venetian plaster is layered and polished tight. Limewash is brushed on in loose, cross-hatched passes. Microcement goes down for a seamless, concrete-look surface on walls and features. Each one is a different tool and a different hand, and our crew does this work every day.
Interior & Exterior Painting
Beyond the specialty finishes, we handle the full interior and exterior painting on the project: prep, primer, and topcoats in the right system for the surface and the LA sun. We do not paint over problems, we fix them first. Trim, millwork, doors, and ceilings all get cut in clean.
Sealing, Protection & Final Walk
Plaster in a kitchen, bath, or busy hallway gets sealed so it can be wiped down and shrug off moisture. Then we pull the masking, clean up, and walk the whole job with you in daylight and again under lamps at night, because a wall that looks perfect at noon can show a missed spot after dark. Anything you catch, we fix before we call it done.

Decorative Finishes & Painting in Los Angeles Frequently Asked Questions
Both are hand-applied plaster, but they land in different places. Roman clay is softer and more matte, with a gentle, cloudy movement. It is forgiving, easy to touch up later, and it is the one most people picture when they want a warm, lived-in wall. Venetian plaster is polished tighter and can be burnished up to a near-marble sheen, so it reads more formal and shows off in entries, powder rooms, and feature walls. We steer you based on the room and how much sheen you actually want, not on which one sounds fancier.
A standard 2,000 to 3,000 sq ft home runs about 5 to 7 days for a full interior repaint, and that includes real prep: patching, sanding, priming, and two coats, not just rolling fresh color over what is already there. Specialty finishes run on their own schedule and take longer. A Roman clay ceiling in a single room can take 3 to 4 days by itself, because each coat has to cure before the next one goes on.
Yes. We do full exterior repaints: pressure wash, scrape and sand, spot-prime bare wood and stucco, then finish coats in a premium exterior-grade system rated for the LA sun. On stucco we caulk and patch the cracks first, because exterior paint fails at the cracks and edges long before it fails in the open field. We are not just spraying a fresh color over a tired wall.
Look at the wall in raking light, meaning light coming across it at a low angle, in the morning or the evening. A good Roman clay or Venetian plaster wall has even, intentional movement and no hard start-and-stop lines. A bad one shows trowel marks, blotchy patches, dark seams where the plasterer stopped and restarted, and low spots telegraphing through from poor prep underneath. Almost always, a bad plaster job traces back to skipped prep, not the plaster itself. That is why we spend most of the job on the wall before the finish ever goes on.
Limewash is a thin mineral coating with a soft, cloudy patina. Roman clay is a smoother, modern clay-based finish with subtle movement. Venetian plaster is a polished, lime-based finish with a stone-like sheen. Microcement is a thin cementitious coating used on walls, floors, and wet areas, durable and seamless.
Yes. Surface prep, patching, sanding, priming, and sealing, is built into every painting and decorative finish scope. Specialty finishes require specific substrate prep that we account for upfront.
Yes. We color-match paint, stain, and decorative finishes to existing samples, and can blend transitions or refinish entire surfaces when matching is not feasible.
Many do. Microcement, tadelakt, and sealed Venetian plaster are appropriate for wet areas when correctly detailed. We confirm system suitability for each substrate and exposure during design.
Timelines depend on area and system. Single-room decorative finishes often install in 3 – 7 days including prep and cure; whole-home applications run multiple weeks and are sequenced with other trades.
Surface prep, substrate condition, the finish system, number of coats, sheen and color, ceiling and trim work, access (scaffolding or lifts), and total area drive pricing more than the finish name itself.
