Backyard Remodeling in Los Angeles
Your private escape, built to last.
In Los Angeles you get 300+ days of sun a year, so the backyard isn't an amenity here. It's the room you actually use. We build backyard remodeling in Los Angeles to the same standard as the inside of the house: pools and spas, paver decks, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and planting that looks designed instead of assembled from whatever the landscaper had on the truck. The part nobody sells you on is drainage. Water is where backyards fail. Before anything gets poured, we work out where it goes: grading that falls away from the house, channel drains in the hardscape, and French drains on the uphill side so the patio isn't a pond every January. Get that wrong and the nicest travertine in LA still heaves and stains. Permits are the other reality. A pool, a real retaining wall, the gas and electrical for an outdoor kitchen: those get pulled and inspected through LADBS or your city, and hillside lots add geotech and grading review on top. On a hillside lot, the pool and deck often sit on caissons drilled into the slope, because the dirt moves and the structure can't.

Backyard Features We Build
A proven approach that keeps your project on track.
Custom Pool Installation
A pool is the one backyard element you can't redo cheaply, so we engineer it first. Gunite shell, infinity or negative edge where the site calls for it, lap pools, and pool and spa combinations. Every build gets an equipment vault, automated lighting and heating, and a plumbing and electrical plan that meets code. Pools always get permitted and inspected through LADBS or your city, and on a hillside they get engineered for the slope before anyone digs.
Outdoor Kitchen & BBQ Design
A built-in outdoor kitchen is mostly about the rough-in you don't see. We set the gas line, the electrical, and a GFCI-protected circuit before the stone or stucco base goes up, then build in the grill, side burners, refrigeration, bar seating, and overhead lighting. Countertops are sealed stone that can take direct sun without fading or blowing out. Done right it's an extension of the kitchen, not a cart parked on the patio.
Limestone Paver Decks & Patios
Limestone and travertine are the default around LA pools for a reason: they stay cool underfoot in August and they age well in this climate. We also set bluestone and concrete pavers. The part that matters is underneath. Pavers on a bad base or without drainage will settle, rock, and pool water within a season, so we build the base, the slope, and the drains before the first stone goes down.
Fire Pits & Outdoor Fireplaces
A fire feature is what keeps the backyard usable on a cool LA night. We build them in concrete, natural stone, or brick, gas or wood-burning, tied into the overall design instead of dropped in as an afterthought. Gas runs get their own line and shutoff, and everything is built to the local fire code, which matters more every year in the hillside and brush-adjacent neighborhoods we work in.
Landscaping & Hardscaping
Planting is the last layer and the one that ties everything together, so we plan it with the hardscape, not after. Drought-tolerant natives and Mediterranean species that actually belong in this climate, formal hedgerows for privacy, artificial turf where grass won't survive, and irrigation and lighting run before the beds go in. Designing it alongside the hardscape is the only way the finished yard reads as one thing.

Backyard Remodeling & Outdoor Living in Los Angeles Frequently Asked Questions
A new pool with the hardscape around it usually runs 3 to 5 months from permit to completion, and most of that is the pool itself: excavation, steel, gunite cure, plumbing, tile, and deck. A hardscape-only backyard with no pool comes together faster, usually 4 to 8 weeks. Rain, city plan-check backlogs, and hillside access are what stretch a schedule, and we'll tell you upfront if your site has any of them.
Yes, and it's not the part you want to handle yourself. A pool in Los Angeles needs a building permit, plan check, and a string of inspections (excavation, steel, electrical bonding, plumbing, final), plus the barrier and fencing requirements that come with any pool. We pull all of it and manage the inspections so the project doesn't stall. In some cities and hillside zones the plan check takes longer, and we build that into the schedule instead of promising you a date we can't hit.
Yes, and a lot of our work is on slopes. Hillside backyards live or die on the structural and drainage engineering: retaining walls, caissons, and grading that moves water off the property instead of into your foundation or your neighbor's yard. On a hillside lot, the pool and deck often sit on caissons driven into the slope, because the soil moves and the structure cannot. That's geotech and engineering, not landscaping, and it's where hillside budgets go.
Skipping the drainage. Almost every failed backyard we get called in to fix has the same root cause: water with nowhere to go. Pavers settle, retaining walls lean, patios stain, and the wood on the pergola rots, all because nobody engineered where the runoff went before they poured. We grade the site, set deck and channel drains, and run French drains on the uphill side before any finish material goes down. It's invisible when it's done right, and it's the first thing to fail when it's skipped.
Outdoor refreshes typically run $40K – $100K, full backyard remodels $100K – $300K, and high-end pool or structural projects $300K – $750K+. Hardscape, pool work, and structural elements drive the largest swings.
We coordinate pool work with licensed pool partners and integrate it with hardscape, decking, equipment screening, and landscape so the whole backyard reads as one cohesive design.
Yes. We design and build outdoor kitchens with appropriate gas, plumbing, electrical, drainage, and stone or tile finishes engineered for outdoor exposure.
Most full backyard projects run 4 – 9 months depending on scope, structural work, pool sequencing, and city plan check timing.
Often, yes. Pools, structural elements, electrical and gas service, drainage changes, and certain hardscape work typically require permits. We handle submittals and inspection coordination.
